Buckeyes' Ryan Day Considered Auctioning Off First Play Of Season For NIL
Name, image and likeness has been a contested subject recently due to its lack of uniform restrictions.
Some coaches and players have gotten creative with their NIL deals, such as Decoldest Crawford's deal with a heating and cooling company in Omaha. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day thought of getting creative with an NIL opportunity on the Buckeyes Cruise For Cancer, which raises money for cancer research at The James Cancer Hospital.
"I was willing to auction off the first call of the Indiana game this year on the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer, but I decided against it," Day said at Big Ten Media Days Wednesday. "Figured that was gonna be some sort of rules violation."
Different states have different NIL rules and any rule the NCAA has regarding NIL trumps that of the states. But the truth of the matter is, there aren't that many regulations so who knows if it would have actually been a violation?
Day was playing it safe by not allowing a fan buy their way into the Buckeyes' playbook — a strategy Ohio State and its collectives have taken with NIL for its student-athletes.
"We're doing a lot of different things that I think are for the first time," Day said. "You've seen us not be maybe the first people to do things that are extreme or put ourselves out there, but do it in a first-class way, a classy way, do it the way that Buckeye Nation can be proud of — that we're doing it the right way to make sure we give our players what they deserve, but we're also not getting crazy and out in front of it."
The only question that remains: if you had won the auction, what play would you call?
