Ohio State Buckeyes athletic director Gene Smith is scheduled to speak with members of the media Wednesday morning for the first time since last season.

Smith’s press appearance comes only a handful of days after Buckeyes kicked off their Fall Camp, marking the unofficial beginning to the 2023 athletic season.

There is certainly plenty of buzz surrounding both Ohio State and the world of college football as a whole, and Smith’s availability might help to make some of that more clear.

For instance, the Big Ten conference announced the addition of Oregon and Washington beginning in 2024.

The Ducks and Huskies are the third and fourth teams from the West Coast that will be starting their time in the conference next year, along with USC and UCLA.

Other topics of note for Smith include the return to play for several Ohio State teams that made deep playoff runs last season. For example, the Buckeyes women’s volleyball team made it to the NCAA Regional Finals before falling to Texas.

Ohio State also finished third in the LEARFIELD Director’s Cup, which is awarded to the school with the most athletic success during a given season.

Smith is set to begin his 19th year as Ohio State’s athletic director, taking over for Andy Geiger in 2005.

The Cleveland, Ohio native has the third-longest tenure as AD behind L.W. Scott (35 years; 1912-1947) and Richard Larkins (23 years; 1947-1970).

With plenty on which to speak, Smith’s time at the podium is sure to bring a plethora of answers to the recent headlines around Ohio State and college football, but also plenty more questions.
