Former Ohio State Buckeyes and Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams was suspended six games for violating the NFL's gambling policy, according to a release.

Williams was one of five players to be suspended for gambling Friday. Alliance Sports, the agency that represents Williams, confirmed in a statement that his suspension "was not for betting on football but rather due to a technical rule regarding the actual location in which the online bet was placed."

"Jameson takes full responsibility for his actions and is very apologetic to the NFL, his teammates and the fans and city of Detroit," Alliance Sports said in a statement. "Jameson would never intentionally jeopardize the integrity of the game he loves so much and looks forward to getting back to his team as soon as possible."

Lions receiver Stanley Berryhill was also suspended six games, while Detroit receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore and Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney were suspended indefinitely and can apply for reinstatement after the 2023 season, according to a release.

Williams began his college career at Ohio State as a four-star recruit, the 13th-best receiver and the top player in Missouri, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings, in the class of 2019.

Playing in 10 games across two seasons with the Buckeyes, Williams hauled in 15 passes from Justin Fields for 266 yards and three touchdowns, including a 45-yard pitch-and-catch in the fourth quarter of the Sugar Bowl in 2021 in a national championship berth.

Williams transferred to Alabama for his junior season where he became one of the most prolific pass-catchers in all of college football.

In 2021, he was fifth and third in receiving yards and touchdowns with 1,572 and 15, respectively.

He rounded out the trio of former Buckeye receivers to be selected consecutively in the 2022 NFL Draft, following up Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave, respectively, as the No. 12 overall pick to the Lions.

In six games in a rookie season in which he battled injuries recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered against Georgia Jan. 10, 2022, Williams caught one pass — a 41-yard touchdown strike against the Minnesota Vikings.
