Carnell Tate, Davison Igbinosun Lose Black Stripe After Saturday Scrimmage
It took five, yes five, spring practices for wide receiver Carnell Tate and cornerback Davison Igbinosun to lose their Black Stripe, signifying on Saturday they both have earned their spots as Ohio State Buckeyes.
Tate came in as a four-star recruitΒ and was the first high school class of 2023 recruit to lose his Black Stripe. Igbinosun, a transfer from Ole Miss, joined the Buckeyes' program this offseason, marking the fourth to have the Black Stripe removed from his helmet.
Head coach Ryan Day said after Ohio State's Saturday scrimmage that the two have both shown "competitiveness."
"Both of those guys have competed," Day said. "They've shown up in practice right from the first play."
Rather than taking a victory lap for himself, Tate thanked "B.I.A." β Ohio State's nickname for its cornerbacks' room meaning Best In America β for making him "better each and every day." He then thanked the wide receivers, offensive coordinator Brian Hartline and offensive program assistant Devin Jordan for "pushing me to understand the game at the next level."
After Tate, Igbinosun took center stage for his acceptance speech, thanking cornerbacks coach Tim Walton, whom he referred to as "OG Walt."
Tate may have to wait his turn to see the field with the loaded wide receiver corps the Buckeyes boast, but Igbinosun has the opportunity to step in and compete for a starting role in what was a shaky cornerbacks room last season.
In 2022, the Union, N.J. native played in 13 games, recording 37 tackles and defending five passes.
