Penn State Wing Evan Mahaffey Transfers to Ohio State
Former Penn State Nittany Lions wing Evan Mahaffey announced on Instagram Wednesday that he was transferring to Ohio State.
Mahaffey becomes the Buckeyes' third transfer this offseason and the second from a Big Ten school, joining Minnesota Golden Gophers forward Jamison Battle and Baylor Bears guard Dale Bonner.
"Next chapter," Mahaffey captioned his post.
Mahaffey told 247Sports that he "wanted to find that spot with the best fit" when searching for his new home in the transfer portal.
“I know this year I felt like the fit was good, but I think with the good opportunity to go in the portal, I found a really good fit and that played a really big part," Mahaffey said. "I think looking at the system and the people they’ve had, I think I can really thrive for them. The coaching staff is also great. They always send guys to the league and I think it’s a really big opportunity for me especially on that stage.”
He adds to the youth the Buckeyes will have on the roster next season, but unlike Ohio State's big-three sophomore core, he didn't have the massive minutes load they did in his first year in State College, PA.
During his freshman season at Penn State, Mahaffey played in 34 of the Nittany Lions 37 games and, in 9.3 minutes per game, averaged 2.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.3 assists. He made 62.3 percent of his 2-point attempts last season, which was the best of any Nittany Lion and would have been second on the Buckeyes to former forward Eugene Brown III.
