Troy Aikman, Dak Prescott Speak on Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott's Release

The Dallas Cowboys released longtime running back Ezekiel Elliott Wednesday.

For the first time in his career, former Ohio State Buckeyes running back Ezekiel Elliott will wear a helmet without the Dallas Cowboys' star on its side.

Elliott was released by the Cowboys Wednesday, and former teammate and quarterback Dak Prescott as well as Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman sang their praise of Elliott Thursday.

Aikman said the Cowboys are "really going to miss one of their real core players in that locker room" which likely made the decision to release him after seven seasons in Dallas "so gut-wrenching."

"I always felt when I was playing that there are guys that you just don't replace and they have a big impact, regardless of whatever they're doing on the field, with the continuity and the success of a football team," Aikman said. "I really believe that Zeke is one of those guys."

Prescott, who entered the league with Elliott in 2016, said it was "tough" hearing the news.

Prescott talked with Elliott after the news broke and said he's sure Elliott was hurt by the news.

"Playing the game with a brother, being able to start this NFL career, share so many memories and grow up as men with this organization," Prescott said. "I really can't imagine taking the field without him. I don't know if it's completely hit me yet."

Elliott led the league in rushing yards in 2016 and 2018 with 1,631 and 1,434 yards, respectively. The three-time Pro Bowler has rushed for 1,000 yards in four of his seven seasons in the NFL, totaling 8,262 yards and 68 touchdowns on the ground in his career.

The St. Louis native is coming off his worst year of his career, though, notching career lows in rushing yards and yards per carry. He played in 15 games last season and found the end zone 12 times.

Prescott said now his focus is to "support" Elliott however he can.

"I know he's got more opportunities coming his way," Prescott said. "Love that guy, proud of him. No. 1 supporter in here for him no matter what."
