Mike Gundy Claims Zane Flores is 'Not Ready' Amid Quarterback Controversy

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are struggling to name a starting quarterback, but Zane Flores is out of the cards.

It's evident the Oklahoma State Cowboys are struggling to settle on a starting quarterback. Unless something insane happens during this week of practice, Mike Gundy will use three quarterbacks in Week 4 as the team starts Big 12 play against Iowa State.

Why not bring in a fourth quarterback mix? While it's a fun hypothetical, Gundy confirmed that Zane Flores would not be added to the competition.

“Zane’s not ready. Great future. Great prospect. Love every bit of him. But Zane’s not ready right now," Gundy said at his Monday press conference.

Ahead of the season kicking off, Gundy said something similar, stating that there shouldn't be a true freshman quarterback starting in most cases. Flores enrolled early last Spring and is undergoing his redshirt freshman year.

Alan Bowman, Gunnar Gundy and Garret Rangel are fighting for the starting quarterback spot, which is odd to say considering they've all got three games played under their belt and many practices.

The reigning Gatorade Player of the Year in Nebraska is going to be a huge part of this program and make an impact in the new-look Big 12 for years to come, but it appears that he's first going to spend this year preparing from the sideline.

In Week 2, Flores was the practice player of the week for the offensive unit. It seems his redshirt year of preparation is going accordingly.

In the meantime, the other three quarterbacks will continue sharing the game, divided in thirds, as the team looks to bounce back after an embarrassing 33-7 Week 3 loss to South Alabama.

Currently, none of the quarterbacks are seemingly standing apart from each other. The constant rotation under center is hurting the flow of the game and impacting the rest of the offense and the defense.

Who knows -- maybe the Pokes would be best off just letting Flores develop with live game reps and go into conference play with no real expectations.
