Mississippi State Walks Off Ole Miss to Even Series in Starkville
The Ole Miss Rebels dropped a heartbreaker to the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday in Starkville, falling 8-7 after taking a lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Ole Miss claimed a 7-6 lead in the top of the ninth while trailing 6-5 behind RBIs from Jacob Gonzalez and Anthony Calarco, but walks, wild pitches and a game-ending base hit from Rebel pitchers Mason Nichols and Sam Tookoian gave the Bulldogs the walk-off win in the ninth.
The series in Starkville is now tied at one game apiece, and the Rebels saw two RBIs from Calarco and Gonzalez and one from Ethan Groff and Will Furniss in the loss.
Xavier Rivas drew the start on the hill for Ole Miss, working 4.1 innings of four-hit, four-run ball, and he gave way to Brayden Jones who worked 2.1 innings of two-run ball. Sam Tookoian was credited with the loss due to the two-RBI single that ended the game.
With the loss, Ole Miss falls to 3-11 in the SEC and 20-15 overall, and they will look to capture the series win tomorrow once again at Dudy Noble Field against the Bulldogs.
First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT, and the game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
