Ole Miss Drops Weekend Series to No. 1 LSU After Losing 8-4 on Saturday
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Rebels fell 8-4 on Saturday afternoon in LHP Hunter Elliott’s return to the mound, losing their home weekend series to the No. 1 LSU Tigers in game two.
Elliott’s first start since Opening Day was rocky off the bat. The sophomore struck out his first batter of the day before surrendering a walk followed by a two-run blast from LSU center fielder Dylan Crews in the first inning. The Tupelo, Miss., native finished his first and only inning of the day with three strikeouts and three walks.
Elliott was quickly replaced in the second inning by RHP Mason Nichols after he loaded the bases with no outs before reaching his 50-pitch limit. Nichols got out of the inning, but the Rebels quickly found themselves in a 6-0 hole. Nichols was replaced after 3.0 innings by RHP Cole Tolbert, who surrendered a solo shot in the fifth inning giving LSU a 7-0 lead. Tolbert’s day was done after throwing 3.0 innings, recording four hits, one walk, one earned run, four strikeouts, and a 1.42 ERA. Freshman RHP Mason Morris finished the game for the Rebels, issuing three walks and three strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
The Ole Miss offense found life briefly in the sixth inning, however, after left fielder Kemp Alderman walloped a three-run blast 453 feet to dead center cutting down LSU’s lead to four runs. The Rebels were able to get one more across home plate in the bottom of the ninth thanks to an error from LSU.
With the loss, the Rebels fall to 21-18 overall and 3-14 in the Southeastern Conference, remaining winless in SEC series this season. Ole Miss will try to avoid getting swept by LSU on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. CT.
