Ole Miss Shortstop Jacob Gonzalez Named Semifinalist for 2023 Brooks Wallace Award
OXFORD, Miss. -- Despite dealing with a rough national championship hangover this spring, one of the few bright spots on the Ole Miss Rebels baseball team received some well-deserved recognition on Tuesday as shortstop Jacob Gonzalez was named one of the 25 semifinalists for the 2023 Brooks Wallace Award by the College Baseball Foundation.
The award is annually given to the best shortstop in the nation and is named after former Texas Tech Red Raiders shortstop Brooks Wallace. Gonzalez was a semifinalist for the award in 2022 and is one of four players to be selected a second year in a row. The Glendora, Calif., native is attempting to be the first Rebel to win the award since Grae Kessinger took home the honors in 2019.
The junior is currently batting .326 in 190 plate appearances recording 45 runs scored, 62 hits, nine home runs, and 50 RBIs. Gonzalez leads Ole Miss in on-base percentage (.440), walks (35), doubles (18), and sacrifice flies (7). His best work at the plate this season has come when the Rebels are down two outs. Gonzalez owns a .418 average and 19 RBIs when batting with two outs.
Gonzalez has also significantly improved his glove this spring, as he has only made five errors all season and currently owns a .968 fielding percentage, which is his career-high at Ole Miss. He has scored 185 career runs, good enough for the fourth most in Ole Miss history, and is just three runs away from claiming second place.
