Rebels Win Third Straight, Take Down Memphis in Midweek Baseball
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Rebels overcame an early deficit on Wednesday night and claimed a 5-3 midweek win over the Memphis Tigers at Swayze Field, good for their third straight win and seventh victory in the last eight games.
Memphis pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning against starter Riley Maddox, but he was able to buckle down and throw five complete innings of six-hit ball without allowing another run. He also struck out six batters and only allowed one walk.
Maddox was relieved by Brayden Jones, Austin Simmons and Connor Spencer on the hill. The other run of the night came against Simmons, although it was unearned.
On the offensive side, Ethan Groff, Ethan Lege and Reagan Burford all accounted for home runs for Ole Miss, and Lege led the team in RBIs with two. Burford's homer cut the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the second, and Groff and Lege's big flies gave the Rebels the lead in the bottom of the third.
Jackson Ross also brought home a run with a double in the sixth inning before Memphis' final run of the night came in the eighth on a passed ball.
