Rebels Blow Ninth-Inning Lead, Swept at Home by LSU Tigers
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Rebels were nearly able to salvage a game against the No. 1 LSU Tigers on Sunday afternoon, but a ninth-inning collapse put the visitors on top to sweep the series.
The game was tied at four until the bottom of the eighth inning saw the Rebels' Judd Utermark hit a two-run homer that gave Ole Miss its late lead. Relief pitcher Mitch Murrell, who entered into the game in the seventh inning, had a clean outing until the top of the ninth when he surrendered a three-run home run to put the Tigers on top and eventually give them the game.
Utermark's two RBIs led Ole Miss in the loss, and he was joined in that category by Kemp Alderman, Anthony Calarco, Calvin Harris and Will Furniss. JT Quinn drew the start on the mound for Ole Miss, working four innings of 10-hit, four-run ball, and he was relieved by Sam Tookoian prior to Mitch Murrell's appearance.
Sunday's loss gives the Rebels their second time being swept at home, the other coming earlier this season against the Florida Gators. Ole Miss now holds an overall record of 21-19 and 3-15 in SEC play.
The Rebels will return to the field on Tuesday against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Pearl, Miss., for the annual Governor's Cup game. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
