Ole Miss Signee Jordan Burks Requests Release, Re-Opening Recruitment

The Ole Miss Rebels are experiencing some odd back-and-forth with the 2023 recruiting class.

The arrival of new head coach Chris Beard has done wonders in keeping a handful of talent to stay next season for the Ole Miss Rebels.

But of course, this isn't the case for everyone.

Southern California Academy (Castaic, Calif.) 2023 forward Jordan Burks signed his letter of intent with the Rebels on Nov. 9, 2022, but has requested that the university release him from it in order to re-open his recruitment, per reports Wednesday from On3.

This is certainly a sudden turn of events. Burks had recently told On3 on March 13 that after speaking with Beard, he wanted to stay committed to Ole Miss. But his change of heart came quickly.

Burks, a 6-7, 180-pound forward, took his talents from California to Hillcrest Prep (Gilbert, Ariz.) where has been playing in the Overtime Elite league. He averaged 27.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists this past season with the team.

The Rebels still have a commitment in the class of 2023 from Blytheville (Blytheville, Ark.) Rashaud Marshall, who did the opposite of Burks. He requested to be released from his NLI last month, but re-committed to Ole Miss after speaking with Beard.

Ole Miss also retains a signature from 2023 Parklane Academy (McComb, Miss.) forward Jacob Gazzo.

The Rebels will continue to experience a bit of uncertainty with the roster given the coaching change, but Beard appears to have the program on the right track early in his tenure.
