Rebels' Matthew Murrell Receives All-SEC Second Team Honors
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Southeastern Conference revealed their men's basketball honors for the 2024 season on Monday, and Ole Miss Rebels guard Matthew Murrell was named to the All-SEC second team.
As a senior, Murrell led Ole Miss in scoring (16.3 points per game), three-point percentage (0.393), steals (50), and minutes (1,023) in 2024. Murrell led the Rebels in scoring for the second year in a row. The Memphis, Tenn., native was one of the most efficient scorers in the SEC, as he finished ninth in the conference in points per game, 10th in field goal percentage (46.5), and tied for fifth in three-pointers made per game (2.4).
Murrell became the 42nd player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points as a Rebel during non-conference play, and has since scored 1,430. Murrell is now ranked 16th on the all-time scoring list, and has also knocked down the fifth-most three-pointers in Ole Miss basketball history with 215.
Murrell's 2024 campaign was productive, but he was the only Rebel who received a postseason honor this season. Ole Miss closed out its regular season on Saturday with a brutal loss at home to the Texas A&M Aggies, and will likely miss the NCAA Tournament after finishing SEC play with a 7-11 record. The Rebels finished their non-conference slate with a perfect 13-0 record, but got hit with a heavy dose of reality in the second half of the season.
Rebels' Beard Apologizes For Lackluster Performance vs. Texas A&M
The Rebels' season ended on a sour note, but they still have to appear in the second round of the 2024 SEC Tournament on Thursday. The Rebels will have a chance to get a little payback, as they are set to face Texas A&M in Game 5 of the competition. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT in the Bridgestone Arena, and the game will be televised on SEC Network.
