Carolina Panthers QB Matt Corral Switching Back to Old College Number

Ex-Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Matt Corral is making a switch back to his college number.

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Carolina Panthers announced on Tuesday morning that their No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, quarterback Bryce Young, will start his professional career wearing No. 9, the number he previously wore in college playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The interesting part about this number reveal is that former Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Matt Corral was previously the owner of the Panthers' No. 9 jersey. Since Carolina made the announcement this morning, it has been disclosed that Corral will be switching to No. 2, the number he previously wore playing for Ole Miss.

Corral was selected by the Panthers in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft but was forced to sit out all of his rookie year after he suffered a foot injury during the preseason playing behind the third-string offensive line in Carolina. Corral was considered one of the top quarterbacks in last year's draft class after throwing for 8,287 yards, 57 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions, with a 67.3 completion percentage.

Now that the Panthers have drafted Young first overall, however, the consensus around the league is that Corral will likely not get another shot to start in Carolina. Corral was drafted by ex-Carolina coach Matt Rhule who was replaced by Frank Reich this offseason.
