'He's a Dog': Rebels' Tre Harris Gives High Praise to Freshman Ayden Williams
OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss Rebels receiver Tre Harris is new to the roster, but he is ready to make an immediate impact this season after he transferred from the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in January.
Harris spent the last three seasons at Louisiana Tech, where he caught 106 receptions for 1,527 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns in 24 games. The senior wideout hauled in 10 of those 14 touchdowns in 2022 and aims to have a big role in Ole Miss' offense after receiving First Team All-Conference USA honors last season.
Harris had media availability on Thursday for the first time since arriving at Ole Miss and discussed how he and the other transfers are adjusting to their new teammates and surroundings.
"So far, I'm fitting in perfectly," Harris told reporters. "Not even just myself, I feel like that goes for all the guys who transferred over. Everybody's starting to mesh together and have a better camaraderie with each other and we're starting to come together for the season."
Harris explained how veteran receivers Jordan Watkins and Dayton Wade have helped make the transition process easier for their new teammates.
"It's more outside of football," Harris said. "Just hanging out with each other, taking guys out to certain places and just being able to get to know each other outside of football. Knowing each other's interests, hobbies, and just building that bond with each other."
Harris continued that one of the main reasons he decided to transfer to Ole Miss was because of the receivers the Rebels have recently put in the NFL.
"That was a huge part of it," Harris said. "Going into the [transfer] process, I wanted to go somewhere where they develop guys to be good receivers in the [NFL] and that's the goal for me. I knew coming here [Ole Miss] could definitely develop me into a first-round talent at receiver."
Most recently in the 2023 NFL Draft, former Ole Miss receiver Jonathan Mingo was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the second round after he set the school record for most receiving yards in a game with 247 in 2022.
New transfers at Ole Miss either have a hard time adjusting to the playbook or they do not, and Harris is included in the latter group.
"[Learning the playbook] wasn't too hard for me," Harris said. "Coming from an air raid offense at Louisiana Tech, a lot of those concepts pop up in different playbooks and stuff like that. So coming in, it wasn't too hard to learn the playbook, to be honest."
Ole Miss recruited the No. 1 receiver in the state of Mississippi in the 2023 cycle in Ayden Williams, and Harris gave high praise to the true freshman who has turned heads during fall camp.
"He's a dog," Harris said with a grin. "He's legit and he's wearing that No. 1 jersey for a reason and he deserves it. He's going to show a lot of people why he's wearing the No. 1 and in the next few years he's going to be that guy, I promise you that."
Williams may be the next best thing at receiver, but it is Harris' time to shine this season, as the senior wideout was recently named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Biletnikoff Award.
