Trey Washington Taking Leadership Role in New-Look Ole Miss Defense
Trey Washington, a rising junior safety with the Ole Miss Rebels from Trussville, Alabama, sat down with the media Thursday afternoon to discuss the upcoming season and the growth of the team during the offseason.
Washington was one of two defensive backs who spoke with reporters on Thursday, and he believes his side of the ball has made large strides this offseason.
"Between spring and fall camp, we have made a lot of growth," Washington said. "Growing on a daily basis is the main shift of focus for the defense this fall camp.
He is taking a step up this year and looks to provide a leadership role with the new players coming into the secondary, placing an emphasis on building a united culture in Oxford.
"Trying to welcome them into the culture and introducing them to things how Kiffin wants it," Washington said.
He believes that everything has run smoothly during practice, but executing and producing during games are a new focus for him as he heads into the start of his upperclassman season.
When asked about how he has been learning the new Pete Golding defense, Washington felt like there were no troubles understanding it, but relaying it to those around him.
"Once you learn it individually, you have to learn to communicate it with teammates," he said.
Last season, Washington appeared in 13 games for the Rebels, tallying 31 total tackles and an interception. As a rising junior, he is expected to see more improvement and play a large role in this new defense under Golding.
