This will be the second time this season that an Oregon game has been selected as the national game of the week. Just two weeks ago the Ducks had the spotlight on them for their rivalry game in Seattle against the Washington Huskies, which they lost in heartbreaking fashion 36-33.
Oregons enters week 9 at 6-1 overall with a 3-1 record in the Pac-12. On Saturday the Ducks defeated Washington 38-24 at home in Eugene. Running back Bucky Irving stole the show offensively, scoring three touchdowns and recording 180 all-purpose yards.Â
The Ducks defense was able to contain Cougars quarterback Cameron Ward. Players like linebacker Jestin Jacobs, who made his Oregon debut, as well as Matayo Uiagalelei and others brought Ward down for six total sacks.
As for No. 14 Utah, the Utes stunned the No. 18 USC Trojans on Saturday in Los Angeles, pulling out a thrilling 34-32 win. Quarterback Bryson Barnes, a former walk-on, scored four total touchdowns and led a crucial drive that led to a game-winning field goal as time expired.
Oregon and Utah have given fans some great matchups and the Ducks used a strong defensive effort to defeat the Utes last year 20-17 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. But next week the Ducks have to hit the road to Salt Lake City, where they haven't beat the Utes since they had Justin Herbert in 2016.
