Oregon Welcomes More New Faces as Spring Practice Resumes
The Oregon Ducks returned to the practice fields at the Hatfield-Dowlin on Tuesday morning in Eugene.
Players returned to campus following a two-week break, but this time they were joined by a number of new players from the transfer portal and high school ranks in the 2023 recruiting class.
Safety Tysheem Johnson (#0), who transferred from Ole Miss this offseason, joins Chris Hampton's safety room, which also added Evan Williams (#33) from Fresno State following last season.
A couple of other transfers were notable additions on Tuesday, including quarterback Matt Rush (#12), a senior from Washington University and Colson Brunner (#47), a junior long snapper from Central Washington University. The updated roster shows that all 10 of Oregon's transfer portal players have now enrolled in classes and joined the team.
As for the high school ranks, the Ducks added a trio of new players.
Safety Kodi DeCambra (#31) arrives from Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, where the Under Armour All-American made a name for himself as one of the better defensive backs out West and in the country.
Linebacker Jerry Mixon (#54) was one of the best athletes on the West Coast and he should help Brian Michalowksi and Tosh Lupoi build out their depth at inside linebacker as they look for Noah Sewell's successor.
Last but not least, cornerback Solomon Davis (#30) enters the mix at cornerback, where Demetrice Martin has some experienced players to work with like Trikweze Bridges, Dontae Manning and Alabama transfer Khyree Jackson. That's another room that will be interesting to follow as Christian Gonzalez was the most reliable player on a weekly basis, but now he's off to the NFL.
I was surprised we didn't see 2023 cornerback signee Daylen Austin on the updated roster, as a source told me he had already finished up his high school classes, so we'll have to keep an eye out there.
The Ducks had 26 newcomers when spring ball initially started last month, and Johnson seems like the new scholarship player that is most likely to help Oregon right away. My guess is that Rush and Brunner are both walk-ons seeing that Lanning needs to get his scholarship count down to 85 and the Ducks already have sophomore Luke Basso on the roster at long snapper.
Lanning will meet with reporters after practice and we'll have more updates from that.
