Marcus Mariota Signing With Washington Commanders
Marcus Mariota has a new team for the 2024 season.
The former Oregon quarterback and 2014 Heisman Trophy Winner plans to sign a one-year, $8 million deal with the Washington Commanders, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
Mariota spent the 2023 season with the Philadelphia Eagles and served as the primary backup to starting quarterback Jalen Hurts. The Eagles finished the season with an 11-6 record that was good for second place in the NFC East. Their season came to and end when they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 32-9 in the NFC Wildcard game.
The former Oregon passer saw limited action with the Eagles last season, but he completed 15 of his 23 pass attempts (65.2%) for 164 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also ran the ball eight times for 52 total yards.
The Commanders will be the fifth team Mariota has played for in his nine-year NFL career after the Tennessee Titans selected him with the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. In the time since No. 8 has bounced around to the Las Vegas Raiders (2020-2021) and the Atlanta Falcons (2022).
Mariota has thrown for 15,820 total yards and 93 touchdowns against 55 interceptions in 90 games during his NFL career. The Hawaii native has completed 62.7% of his total passes. He's also run for 2,064 total yards and 17 touchdowns on 357 carries.
The Commanders' offense was led by quarterback Sam Howell in 2023 but numerous mock drafts project the team will draft a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The team also hired Adam Peters as their new general manager in January following the firing of head coach Ron Rivera. Other notable free agent signings by Washington early in free agency include former Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler and former Carolina Panthers linebacker Frankie Luvu.
