One School Leads for Elite CB Miles Lockhart Entering Spring
Oregon Ducks cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin has set a high standard for defensive back recruiting in Eugene.
After being named the Pac-12 Recruiter of the Year by 247Sports for the 2023 cycle he's got his sights set on some big-time players in the 2024 class like Miles Lockhart.
Lockhart stands at 5-10, 190 pounds and attends Basha High School in Chandler, Arizona, where the Ducks signed 2023 cornerback Cole Martin.
He's been taking it easy on the recruiting trail of late, with only two trips dating back to Ohio State in November and Colorado more recently.
Even thought he's been taking it easy, the contact from Oregon has stayed consistent.
"I still hear from them a pretty good amount. It's the same, Coach Meat will hit me up just talking about the guys and how he develops," Lockhart said. "He does a great job as well developing with Gonzo coming out this year. With Oregon I have those really good relationships with them. It's real tight. I love everything about it over there."
Demetrice Martin is just one reason the Ducks are a strong contender for the Arizona standout.
"Just the new staff and everything they brought in," he said about what stands out about Oregon. "I love the new staff. I love coach Lanning because I know what he's done and I know what type of guy he is and he's a great defensive mind. I feel like they're recruiting all the right guys to compete for a national championship like Oregon used to do."
Including Oregon, Lockhart said he's hearing the most from a trio of schools.
"Oregon, Utah and Ohio State. Those are the three that come after me the most. That's why they're my top three cause I'm just really big on relationships, how they treat me. If you treat me good I'm gonna want to be at your school and come after you guys as well."
He has a few schools in mind for visits this spring, with one being a recent offer in January.
"I have Ohio State locked in for April 10 for spring practice and I'm trying to make it up to Oregon actually or maybe their spring game or just a practice," Lockhart said. "Just trying to figure out those dates. I may also go up to Wisconsin as well, go check out a practice and get a little visit in."
With some unofficial visits on the horizon, he's also figuring out his plans for official visits.
"Oregon and Utah are going to get an official. Ohio state's getting an official," he said. "Those are my only three that I have locked in for sure getting officials. Wisconsin could probably be getting an official as well."
His Ohio State official visit will fall on June 24 through June 26 and he's been feeling the love from the Buckeyes.
"They're always in contact with me. To be honest they're like number one in contact. They're always texting me, they're always calling me and they just want me to always come up. So I feel like they just show me an immense amount of love and that they really want me there."
The development from Kyle Whittingham and the back-to-back Pac-12 champion Utes has Utah firmly in the mix as well.
"It's just that coaching staff and how they develop their players," Lockhart said. "That's really what I was looking at there. They can take any player and really just develop them. For example, like Clark (Phillips). I know that he was committed to like Ohio State, but they brought him in to Utah. I just really liked the way that they develop their guys and they just win games there. I just I love their style of play."
With his official visit schedule coming into focus he has a date in mind for a commitment.
"I'm committing July 6. That's my Grandma's birthday. It'll be basically right after my officials. I just want my decision to be fresh off my officials, I'll commit then."
Lockhart had plenty of good things to say about Ohio State and wasn't shy about naming the Buckeyes as his leader.
"Yeah they are the leader. They show me the most love I feel like and I say every time they really do make sure that they're in contact with me. They're always constantly 'hey come up here for this, come up here for that.' They're always on me and they let me know that I'm really wanted there. So that's really the reason why they're a leader right now for me."
