Oregon Ducks Quarterback Ty Thompson Enters the Transfer Portal

The redshirt sophomore quarterback will look for a new home after spending the last three seasons with the Ducks.

The transfer portal continues to churn in a busy offseason across college football. 

Oregon Ducks redshirt sophomore quarterback Ty Thompson entered the transfer portal over the weekend, a source confirmed to Ducks Digest on Saturday morning.

The news of Thompson's departure comes on the heels of the Ducks landing a commitment from Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Dillon Gabriel for the 2024 season. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Thompson will leave Eugene after spending the last three seasons with the Ducks. 

He finishes his Oregon career with 456 passing yards and 6 touchdowns against 4 interceptions. He completed 42 of his 66 passes (63.6% completion) and also rushed for 56 yards on 15 carries.

Thompson appeared in seven games in each of the past two seasons after redshirting behind graduate transfer quarterback Anthony Brown during his true freshman season in 2021. He then served as Oregon's backup quarterback behind Heisman Trophy finalist Bo Nix in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. 

The Gilbert, Arizona native played his high school football at Mesquite High School and is the highest-rated quarterback in program history, rated a four-star (0.9809) recruit according to the 247Sports Composite. The same system ranked him the No. 40 player nationally, the No. 7 quarterback and the top recruit in Arizona. 

Thompson was one of six players from Mario Cristobal's 2021 recruiting class that remained at Oregon through the 2023 season. He stuck around in Eugene through the coaching transition from Cristobal to Lanning and also played under three different offensive coordinators (Moorhead, Dillingham, Stein) during his time with the Ducks. 

Schools like Iowa, LSU, Texas A&M and Arizona all recruited the promising signal caller before he ended up signing with Oregon. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

With Thompson entering the transfer portal, the Ducks are projected to have three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster heading into spring practice: senior Dillon Gabriel, redshirt freshman Austin Novosad and true freshman Luke Moga.
