In this story:

In today’s spotlight we will be taking a look at another east to west coast connection with the signing of another corner back. Three-star Collin Gill will be joining a corner back room looking to redeem themselves.

Evaluation

Playing a mix of both corner and safety, Gill looked impressive at both spots. When he plays safety he's able to fly to the ball and get a hand up in the receiver's face, forcing regular incompletions.

The same thing can be said while at corner, only difference is he'll keep up with the receiver right from the start. Being athletic enough to play both positions also allows him to develop into an elite defensive player by understanding the different views of the defense.

His tackling is also great, he breaks down a lot before wrapping up the ballcarrier one-on-one in the open field. He flies to the opposite side of the field if he has to in order to make a play.

A lot of his highlights had him batting balls down left and right which is great thing to see. His best trait has to be his timing, getting to receiver just before or as the ball arrives in time to make plays.

The recruitment, how it happened

Gill’s skill set allowed him to obtain multiple offers early in his high school career. Offers from Washington, Maryland, Cincinnati and SMU were the first among the many.

His recruitment was national and had schools ranging from division one to HBCU. Oregon first offered the cornerback in June 2022.

The three-star was able to visit multiple schools including Michigan, Washington, North Carolina and Utah.

It didn't take Gill long to commit as he announced his pledge to the Ducks about two weeks after getting the offer. He held his commitment and signed during the early signing period and will join the team this fall.

Outlook at Oregon

Oregon has a lot of talent coming into the cornerback room for next season. As we previously covered, they have some work to get done if they want to improve on a rough season aside from Christian Gonzalez.

Gill joins a stacked group of signees which includes four-star’s Cole Martin, Rodrick Pleasant and Daylen Austin. The Ducks also added former Alabama corner Khyree Jackson from the portal this offseason.

Oregon will bring back multiple starters from last season which include Trikweze Bridges and Dontae ManningJahlil Florence also got in the rotation as a true freshman. The Ducks will be looking for a new CB1 with Gonzalez already turning heads and looking like a surefire top-ten pick.

Gill has the skills to make his way up in the depth chart and find a spot  but will have a big ladder to climb and could even develop into a safety if the staff sees a better fit there, which could be the case seeing that the Ducks will lose Jamal Hill, Steve Stephens IV, Bryan Addison and Evan Williams after the 2023 season.
