Evaluation

DeCambra attends one of the most talented high schools in the nation at Bishop Gorman.

They're known to play top level talent no matter the state against schools like Mater Dei (Calif.), Chandler (Ariz.) and Miami Central (Fl.) in recent years. This is worth mentioning because it means he's playing future college talent every season and the Gaels go out of their way to schedule nationally.

On the field he's quick and physical to the ball even when tested in one-on-one matchups on deep passes.

His fired-up energy matches his ability to get into the receiver's heads as it looked like they would look for Decambra first rather than the ball, causing a lot of incompletions. Just because he plays great, and is good in coverage doesn't mean he's afraid to make a hit. He excels at making open-field tackles, something new safeties coach Chris Hampton has noted is key for his group.

Being one of two safety signees along with Tyler Turner, DeCambra plays more of the true safety position down the field, whereas Turner plays a more of that Nickel spot. Either way, both players are strong in coverage and and are more than capable of being imposing defensive backs at the next level.

The recruitment, how it happened

The four-star safety began picking up multiple Pac-12 offers between 2020 and 2021. Schools like Oregon State, Colorado, Washington State and UNLV were the first to offer DeCambra.

Oregon first offered the safety in February of 2022; the same day rival Washington offered him as well. After taking a few visits out west in his region like Washington and even back to his native state of Hawaii the four-star would commit to Oregon three months later.

He was one of the strongest commits of the signing class and was able to sign during the early period back in December.

Outlook at Oregon

As mentioned in Turner’s evaluation, the Oregon safety room is in a bind of its own in a good way. They reloaded with new and old talent with a new safety coach coming in.

Two transfers and two signees are the new faces within the group. Tysheem Johnson and Evan Williams have more experience, giving them the obvious advantage especially for how well they played at their previous schools.

Both DeCambra and Turner have opportunities to earn some playing time either in certain packages or rotations and on special team. Developing these talented first-year players will be the biggest thing for them because they already have the talent, but receiving college level coaching will help them take it up a notch.
