He spent one season in Eugene and appeared in one game as a true freshman and played four snaps, recording a pass breakup. The 6-foot-3, 315-pound defensive lineman entered the transfer portal on April 27 in the days leading up to the annual spring football game.
Mells took official visits to Louisiana Tech and Utah State before landing in Logan. He was one of numerous redshirt freshman to enter the transfer portal following Oregon's 2022 season along with cornerback Jalil Tucker, outside linebacker Anthony Jones, linebacker Harrison Taggart and safety Trejon Williams.
Dan Lanning and the Ducks added multiple high-profile players from the transfer portal to bolster the roster ahead of next season. Former South Carolina edge rusher Jordan Burch headlines the bunch and Oregon's defense also added former Ole Miss defensive back Tysheem Johnson as well as former Iowa linebacker Jestin Jacobs.
