Trio of Recruits Emerging for Oregon at Cornerback in 2024

Taking a look at some of the latest developments at cornerback.
In this story:

The Ducks have 16 verbal commitments in the 2024 recruiting class, but a majority of those pledges (10) are on the offensive side of the ball.

The month of June has seen the Ducks bring in some of their top defensive targets, with names like Kamar Mothudi, Brayden Platt and Aydin Breland headlining this weekend's visitor list.

We've seen the coaching staff make significant progress in the secondary with Chris Hampton landing commitments from Kingston Lopa and Aaron Flowers. Demetrice Martin has also landed a commitment from Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy cornerback Ify Obidegwu

After signing seven cornerbacks (high school + transfer portal) since the end of last season, space is limited and the staff will likely be selective. As we eye the recruiting dead period in July, a few names have gained the most traction for Oregon at cornerback.

Aaron Scott Jr. (Springfield, OH)

With Bryce West, the No. 1 cornerback in Ohio committing to the Buckeyes on Saturday, Scott becomes the primary prep target for Demetrice Martin in the 2024 cycle.

He took his official visit with the Ducks earlier this month and has since made his way to Michigan as well as Ohio State this weekend for official visits. There is some clarity in his recruitment after trimming his list of suitors to five: Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State and Tennesse this month.

I haven't seen a commitment date for Scott just yet, but if Oregon wants to win this one they're going to have to beat Ohio State for one of their top in-state targets. The Ducks don't have a long history of success in Ohio and I don't see them as the leaders, but Demetrice Martin shouldn't be counted out after establishing himself as not only a top-tier recruiter, but also a developer at the position.

The Buckeyes lead the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions with all three picks, but only one of those picks has come in the last three months and a lot has happened in his recruitment since then.

Sione Laulea III (San Mateo, CA)

Laulea is an intriguing option that has popped up for Oregon recently. He's 6'4" and weighs 185 pounds, so we already know he fits the mold of a Dan Lanning cornerback.

He wasn't heavily recruited coming out of high school, landing just one offer from Sacramento State, so he opted for the junior college route. A year later he's become the No. 1 JUCO player in the country (according to 247Sports).

Speaking to people around the Oregon program he's viewed as a guy that can come in and make an instant impact, similar to that of a player who transfers in. He's taken a lot of officials visits recently, making his way out to Utah, Penn State, Miami and USC.

Oregon will get the final official visit this weekend with a decision expected in the near future. I'm told there's a small hurdle the staff needs to overcome in his recruitment so the there's a little bit of work to do here.

It's worth mentioning they've had a history of success with players from College of San Mateo, signing Bennett Williams and George Moore in recent years.

Chris Johnson II (Aledo, TX)

Johnson is another late riser up Oregon's board.

He placed the Ducks in his top six last month and has taken official visits to Oregon, Arizona State and Arkansas in June. The good news for Duck fans is that Oregon got the most recent official visit and he made it to Eugene twice this month.

He has a commitment date of July 4 and I'm that he's likely take in the eyes of the coaching staff. I think the two aforementioned players could be higher on the big board because it seems like they'd have an earlier impact, but I still view Johnson as an interesting option.

He's definitely one to monitor.

Best of the rest

2024 five-star Waco (Tex.) Connally Kobe Black was on campus in Eugene this month as the Ducks try to make some noise in his recruitment. However, I think Texas has been the team to beat for a while now.

The staff has been hitting Texas hard this cycle and are also pursuing Temple (Tex.) Lake Belton cornerback Selman Bridges and hosted him on campus this month. He's working from a top nine that includes Oregon, so it seems like there's time to make up ground.
