Penn State's Evan Mahaffey Enters the Transfer Portal
Evan Mahaffey became the third Penn State player to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal following the 2022-23 season as the program turns toward a new coach.
The website Verbal Commits first reported the news.
Mahaffey, a 6-7 guard/forward from Cincinnati, was part of former coach Micah Shrewsberry's first recruiting class in 2021. He was a 3-star prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite, and was the No. 3 player from Ohio.
Mahaffey played in 34 of Penn State's 37 games last season, averaging 2.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 9.4 minutes per game. He made a huge play in Penn State's overtime victory against Northwestern on March 1, grabbing his only offensive rebound of the game to set up Camren Wynter's game-winning 3-pointer. "He got in there and he willed it," Northwestern coach Chris Collins said of Mahaffey's rebound.
Mahaffey joins Dallion Johnson and Caleb Dorsey in the NCAA Transfer Portal. Both entered the same day news broke regarding Shrewsberry accepting the head coaching position at Notre Dame.
In addition, Seth Lundy, an All-Big Ten player, has announced his intention to forgo his final season of eligibility and enter the NBA Draft.
