Penn State's Peter Gonzalez Wins NFL Latino Youth Honors
Peter Gonzalez, who signed with the Penn State football 2024 recruiting class, won the inaugural NFL Latino Youth Honors, which celebrates Latino youth football players across the country. Each NFL team nominated a local player for the award. The Pittsburgh Steelers nominated Gonzalez, who attends Pittsburgh Central Catholic.
Gonzalez, who is of Cuban and Honduran heritage, was a first-team all-state wide receiver last season. The three-year captain set Pittsburgh Central Catholic's program record for single-season and career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in a season. Gonzalez caught 47 passes for 1,081 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. He also carries a 4.2 grade-point average. Gonzalez credited his father Pete, who played at Pitt and with the Steelers, for introducing him to football.
"The impact football has had on my life, it goes well beyond the field," Gonzalez said, according to the Steelers.com story. "From the teammates and friends that I've made, to the coaches and mentors I've had in my life, all of them have really culminated into making me the man I am today, and that's something I can never repay."I'm always grateful for the connections I've made to the game of football."
The NFL and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation partnered to "celebrate and recognize Hispanic and Latino excellence in and around the NFL community," according to a release. The NFL seeks to
"This initiative underscores the league's commitment to fostering excellence, nurturing the next generation of football players and fans, and recognizing the outstanding contributions of Latino youth within the NFL community and beyond," Marissa Solis, NFL Senior VP of Global Brand & Consumer Marketing, said in a release.
