Which Penn State Player Will Win a Super Bowl Ring This Year?
At least one Penn State football will win a Super Bowl ring, as all four remaining NFL playoff teams roster at least one Nittany Lion. Penn State is guaranteed a spot in Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas, marking the 53rd time the Nittany Lions will be represented in the game. Seven former Lions are on NFL rosters for this weekend's conference championship games. In addition, former Penn State defensive standout Terry Killens will make NFL history as the first person to play in and officiate a Super Bowl.
Who's in the playoffs from Penn State? Here's what to watch in this weekend's NFL conference championship games.
AFC Championship Game
Who: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Baltimore Ravens
When: 3 p.m. ET Sunday
TV: CBS
Penn State players to watch
- Kansas City: Tackle Donovan Smith
- Baltimore: Defensive Odafe Oweh, punter Jordan Stout, receiver Dan Chisena
Penn State story lines: Stout, the Ravens' punter, looks to rebound from a murky day against Houston in the AFC Divisional Round. Stout averaged 42.3 yards per attempt against the Texans (five below his season average) and watched one returned for a touchdown. Chisena is a remarkable Penn State story. The former walk-on receiver signed with Baltimore in mid-January and was elevated to the roster last week. Could Chisena make his first career NFL catch in the playoffs? Smith made news this week, suggesting that the Bills shut off the hot water in the Kansas City locker room after their epic game last week in Buffalo.
NFC Championship Game
Who: San Francisco 49ers vs. Detroit Lions
When: 3 p.m. Sunday
TV: CBS
Penn State players to watch
- San Francisco: Safety Ji'Ayir Brown, defensive tackle Kevin Givens
- Detroit: Fullback Jason Cabinda
Penn State story lines: Brown, the 49ers' rookie safety, did not start against Green Bay last week despite being healthy for the game. Brown missed the final two regular-season games with an injury, though coach Kyle Shanahan suggested the layoff (four weeks considering the playoff bye week) had larger ramifications. "I love Ji’Ayir. It has nothing to do with him. ... When you've got a rookie who hasn’t played in a month, who is a very passionate, aggressive player, I just don’t want to put all that on him, to have him go out in the playoff game when he hasn’t been out there for four weeks." Now the question is, will Shanahan return to Brown for the NFC title game?
