Penn State's Terry Killens to Make Super Bowl History

The former Nittany Lion will become the first person to play in and officiate a Super Bowl.

Former Penn State linebacker Terry Killens is about to make Super Bowl history. Killens will be part of the Super Bowl 58 officiating crew, making him the first person to play in and officiate a Super Bowl. Killens will serve as the umpire of the eight-member crew that will officiate Super Bowl 58 between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Killens played linebacker and defensive end for Penn State from 1992-95 and was part of the Nittany Lions' last undefeated season in 1994. He was second-team all-Big Ten as a defensive end in 1995 and was a third-round draft pick of the Houston Oilers in 1996. Killens played seven NFL seasons, moving to Tennessee with the Oilers in 1997. Killens played in Super Bowl 34 with the Tennessee Titans, making one tackle in the 2000 game against the St. Louis Rams. Killens also played with San Francisco and Seattle before becoming becoming an official.

Killens officiated in college football and the former American Alliance of Football before joining the NFL in 2019. Killens will join a strong Penn State contingent at the Super Bowl. The Nittany Lions will be represented in the Super Bowl for the 53rd time in the game's history.

Three Nittany Lions are on Super Bowl rosters. Safety Ji'Ayir Brown and defensive tackle Kevin Givens will suit up for San Francisco, while offensive tackle Donovan Smith starts for the Chiefs.
