Penn State Vs. Maryland Wrestling Preview: Another Shutout?
The No. 1 Penn State wrestling team already has shut out two Big Ten opponents this season. Could the Nittany Lions make it a third against Maryland?
Penn State should be favored in nine of Sunday's 10 bouts, though 149 pounds will be interesting since both primary wrestlers are competing at an open tournament. That weight class is about the last question for coach Cael Sanderson's team, which has won 50 consecutive duals and is preparing for another postseason run. Here's what to watch in, and how to watch, Sunday's Big Ten wrestling match between Penn State and Maryland.

About the Nittany Lions: Sanderson still hasn't committed, at least publicly, to a starter at 149 pounds, the last lineup spot to solidify before the postseason. And Penn State will continue workout out that weight class at an open tournament Sunday. Freshman Tyler Kasak (6-1) and redshirt junior David Evans (9-2) are competing at the Mat Town College Open 2 at Lock Haven University. Kasak is the event's top seed, while Evans is No. 7. Sanderson said earlier this week that he wanted to ensure both wrestlers have enough bouts to qualify for the postseason. The tournament should accomplish that. Kasak has been superb in bumping up from 141 to replace the injured Shayne Van Ness. Kasak (ranked 12th by InterMat) defeated a pair of top-15 wrestlers, one via a technical fall, before missing last week's road trip to Michigan and Michigan State. Sanderson attributed Kasak and Carter Starocci's absences to "sicknesses" and said both would be ready for the trip to Maryland. But will Kasak wrestle or retain his redshirt? Redshirt junior David Evans replaced Kasak in Michigan, winning a pair of decisions, and could take over the weight class for the season. Sanderson offered no hints this week. "That's a weight class and a decision that we've been trying to figure out what the right solution is there to make sure everyone has a good, fair chance," Sanderson told reporters in State College at his weekly media availability. "That's something we have to resolve here quickly."
Penn State-Maryland matchups to watch: Maryland (1-4 Big Ten) lost 21-15 to Indiana, which Penn State shut out, so the match result won't be in doubt. The question is, who could give Penn State's wrestlers a challenge? One interesting bout is at heavyweight, where former Penn State wrestler Seth Nevills takes on No. 1 Greg Kerkvliet. Perhaps Nevills (ranked 25th) will use some practice-room experience to test Kerkvliet. Braxton Brown (No. 21 at 133) will be a good test for fifth-ranked Aaron Nagao of Penn State, while No. 2 Beau Bartlett should get 17th-ranked Kai Miller at 141. Maryland's highest-ranked wrestler is Jaxon Smith, who is No. 5 at 197 and 7-0 in duals. Unfortunately for Smith, he'll get three-time NCAA champ Aaron Brooks, who has five technical falls this season.
