Pitt F Blake Hinson Regrets Technical Foul
DURHAM -- Fouls were prevalent throughout the Pitt Panthers' upset win over the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday, but there was one call that stood out above the rest.
During a stoppage in play with 16:20 left in the second half, Blake Hinson was given a technical after exchanging words with someone that were deemed unsavory by the officials. The foul was Pitt's seventh less than four minutes into the half and left the team in an undesirable position for the rest of the game, though they ultimately overcame that set back on the way to a victory.
Jeff Capel stated that he never received any clarification for the call while Hinson expressed remorse and understood why he was penalized.
“I shouldn’t have said what I said. I got a tech,” Hinson said with a smile.
The Blue Devils went on to shoot a total of 28 free throws on the night, making 21 of them. Kyle Filipowski was the biggest beneficiary as he went 6-of-7 from the charity stripe while the Panthers struggled to contend with his skill set at times.
Hinson noted that it's easier said than done in terms of avoiding fouling a player like Filipowski, and that it's not something the Panthers allowed themselves to get flustered by.
"Filipowski is seven-foot with skills and can shoot," Hinson said. How can you not foul him? So, it’s like you can’t get mad at each other for fouling, you just got to stay calm.”
