PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers will travel to Spain for a foreign tour next month in anticipation of the 2023-24 season but when they do, they'll be down a member of their frontcourt.

Jorge Diaz-Graham, a 6'11 sophomore and native of Spain, will be out for an extended period with a foot injury, according to Pitt head coach Jeff Capel, but won't be out "long-term."

“Jorge is injured right now,” Capel told Pat Bostick on 93.7 The Fan. “He’s out. He won’t be able to play in Spain with his foot. It’s a six-week deal. He’s in a boot right now. It’s nothing long-term.”

A six-week down period would mean that Diaz-Graham is back in action during the final week of August, well ahead of the expected beginning of the season in late October and early November.

Last season, Diaz-Graham appeared in all 31 games, averaging 2.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and half a block while making 35% of his 3-point shots over nine minutes per appearance. He saw an uptick in playing time during the postseason, while starting center Federiko Federiko dealt with a knee injury.

Capel added that Jorge and his twin brother, Guillermo - a pair of lanky stretch forwards, opted not to play for their national teams and have spent their summers adding mass.

“It’s been really good,” Capel said. “The twins, Jorge and G, they decided not to play for their national team. It was a big decision. Most of the foreign kids really love and grow up in that national system. They chose not to play this summer because they wanted to be here in the weight room. That was a choice they made, I talked to their father about it. ... You can see in their bodies and their faces really, with the commitment they’ve made, with the change they’ve made in the weight room.”
