PITTSBURGH -- The 2022 Backyard Brawl, the first meeting on the gridiron between the Pitt Panthers and the West Virginia Mountaineers, set a new record for attendance at a sporting event in the city of Pittsburgh.

The crowd of 70,622 that packed Acrisure Stadium to see the Panthers and Mountaineers renew their storied rivalry shattered the previous record set by a different rivalry game. The 2018 contest between Pitt and Penn State had set the previous high at 69,983 spectators.

The close proximity of the Panthers' opponents undoubtedly contributed to those gaudy figures, but Pitt fans were similarly fired up about facing those bitter enemies.
