PITTSBURGH -- A new season of college basketball is about to get underway and analyst and statistician Ken Pomeroy has released his first round of preseason rankings ahead of opening day, which offer an optimistic view of the Pitt Panthers.

In the first KenPom rankings of the new season, Pitt checked in at No. 62 nationally, good for seventh in the ACC and No. 56 among teams in high major conferences.

The Panthers are projected to have the No. 67 offense in Division I and the No. 57 defense while playing at a slow pace - KenPom predicts they'll own the No. 214 tempo rate.

Pitt finished last season ranked No. 59 nationally and sixth in the ACC, with the No. 29 offense and No. 103 defense while playing with the No. 171 Temp rate. They ranked 98th in luck against the 81st most difficult schedule.

The Panthers narrowly trail NC State, which is ranked No. 61, in this year's preseason rankings. No. 9 Duke, No. 17 North Carolina, No. 33 Virginia, No. 45 Miami and No. 55 Clemson are the only other ACC teams ranked ahead of Pitt.
