INDIANAPOLIS -- Not many Pitt Panthers defensive backs have been elected in the top rounds of the NFL Draft in recent years, but even when they come from humble beginnings, Panther defensive backs have stuck on multiple NFL rosters.

Among the many Panthers currently in the NFL are former fourth-round picks Damarri Mathis, who started 11 games for the Denver Broncos in his rookie year, and Avonte Maddox, a stalwart nickel corner for the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles. Fellow Day 3 picks Damar Hamlin and Dane Jackson were opening night starters for the Buffalo Bills and key pieces on a team that won the AFC East.

Brandon Hill is trying to achieve the same heights this spring, as his NFL Draft process begins in earnest this week at the NFL Combine. But even as he tries to lock in on his own future, Hill is looking ahead at who else will join the long line of Pitt defensive backs to make waves in the NFL. When asked which Panther returning to school will be in his position next spring, Hill had a quick answer.

“M.J. Devonshire, cornerback, No. 12.”

Hill believes Devonshire is the complete package. He can run, attack the ball and cover with the best of them. The fact that he is self-motivated is another

“I feel like he’s just a complete corner - great speed, great ball skills and he’s got that chip on his shoulder,” Hill said.

Devonshire was a key part of Pitt's three-man cornerback rotation in his first season as a full-time contributor. He made 34 tackles and defended eight passes, including three interceptions. Devonshire was electric with the ball in his hands, scoring three total touchdowns on two interception returns - including the game-winning "Pitt Six" in the Backyard Brawl - and a punt return.
