Calijah Kancey Makes Positive Development in Injury Recovery
PITTSBURGH -- Former Pitt Panthers defensive tackle Calijah Kancey has made a positive development in his recovery from a calf injury suffered during his first week of training camp in the NFL.
The Pitt star turned first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is out of a walking boot now after wearing one all of last week. He was in a helmet but no pads or cleats at Bucs practice to open this week.
Kancey was carted off the practice field after coming up limping in the middle of a non-contact drill last week. He is still expected to miss four weeks during his recovery.
Four weeks is an encouraging timeline for Kancey. That would mean he is back on the field with almost two full weeks to go before the Buccaneers open the 2023 season against Minnesota on the road.
Tampa Bay selected Kancey with the 19th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, giving Pitt first-round picks in consecutive drafts for the first time since 2008-09. He had been wowing Buccaneers brass since stepping into their team.
