Pitt Elevates QB Nate Yarnell on Depth Chart
PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers made the move in practice last week before facing Boston College and now they've codified the change in writing.
On their final depth chart of the 2023 season, Nate Yarnell was listed as Pitt's starter at quarterback and Christian Veilleux was demoted to a backup role. Phil Jurkovec remains the third-stringer, despite some recent work at tight end. As Narduzzi hinted at after the Panthers beat Boston College, Yarnell is expected to start against Duke to close the season, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Yarnell took over as the starting quarterback against Boston College and completed 11 of 19 passes for 207 yards, one touchdown and no turnovers as the Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 24-16 victory. Prior to that, Yarnell had only played sparingly this season, completing five of eight attempts (62.5%) for 123 yards and one touchdown without turning the ball over at all.
Veilleux started five games for the Panthers this season after unseating Phil Jurkovec, who opened the year atop the depth chart. Veilleux has completed 94 of 184 passes (51.1%) for 1,179 yards, seven touchdowns and eight interceptions, plus three fumbles lost.
