PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers' lengthy and growing injury report did not spare the linebackers room last week. When starting STAR linebacker Bangally Kamara emerged from the tunnel at Acrisure Stadium in street clothes and a walking boot, redshirt freshman Kyle Louis knew he would get an opportunity to put his stamp on a big game.

Louis, who had been hurt for most of his true freshman year and into his second set of spring practices, made the first start of his career when Pitt hosted No. 17 North Carolina this past weekend. And with his play against the Tar Heels further cemented the confidence his coaches have in him.

"Kyle Louis is a physical, fast, aggressive -- I love the way he plays," head coach Pat Narduzzi said. "I'm excited about his future."

He tallied three tackles and half a stop for a loss, but Louis' first start didn't come without mistakes. The athletic rookie has some speed and power but got overzealous on some of his tackle attempts. But that's okay, Narduzzi said, because he has already made so many strides and will continue to do so.

"He can play a little bit more under control," Narduzzi said. "He missed a couple tackles, I think three. If you go back and look at it, that's just young guy stuff. He's just so fast. But he will get better rep after rep."

The Panthers' coaching staff sees great potential in Louis and it's not far off into the future. With Kamara's status for the remainder of the season unclear, Louis has an opportunity to become a major contributor immediately.

"Was he perfect? No," Narduzzi said. "Again, nobody is, obviously. But he had a good day, but he could have a great day."
