PITTSBURGH -- Former Pitt Panthers safety Jordan Whitehead's future with the New York Jets seemed to be up in the air this spring. As cap space dwindled, his $10.2 million hit began to look more expensive than the club could afford.

But the Jets found a way to retain one of the four former Panthers that are now on their roster by converting $5.3 million of that $10.2 million cap hit into a signing bonus and adding four void years to the deal, cutting his cap hit down to $4.9 million and allowing him to finish the last year of his contract out in New York.

Th 26-year-old Whitehead was drafted in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft coming out of Pitt. He signed a two-year, $14.5 million deal with the Jets in 2022 and was an immediately productive player, recording 89 tackles, four for loss, two interceptions and eight passes defended while appearing in all 17 games last season.
