Pitt Opponent Hiring New HC
PITTSBURGH -- One of the Pitt Panthers' neighbors in the ACC is close to finalizing a deal with a familiar face to be their new head coach.
The Duke Blue Devils are narrowing their head coaching search and have zeroed in on a name familiar to the Panthers - former Miami head coach and current Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, according to a report from FootballScoop.com.
As a 2022 Broyles Award finalist, Diaz led the Nittany Lions defense to a tie for seventh nationally in takeaways and ninth in scoring defense. They rank third nationally in scoring defense this year and are expected to send at least two defensive players to the first round of this year's NFL Draft, if not more.
He has previous head coaching experience in the ACC from when he led the Hurricanes to a 21-15 record from 2019 to 2021. Diaz has coordinated defenses for Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Texas and Louisiana Tech and served as a graduate assistant at NC State and Florida State.
Under the ACC's new scheduling model, the Panthers and Blue Devils, who have faced each other in all but one season since joining the conference in 2014, will play just twice from now until 2030 - with Pitt hosting the first game in 2027 and Duke hosting the second in 2029.
