PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers were just five plays deep into their final regular season game of the year when they committed a penalty that knocked a player out for the remainder of the game.

The Panthers took the ball first but had to punt after a three-and-out. On the ensuing punt, running back Daniel Carter delivered the hit on the Duke return man that was reviewed for targeting and upheld.

Replays showed that Carter lowered his head and hit the Blue Devils returner in the back with the crown of his helmet.

Carter is listed as the third-string running back on the depth chart and has taken on a smaller and smaller role as the season wears on. He rushed 21 times for 103 yards and a touchdown through the first four weeks of the season but has taken just seven carries and gained just 31 yards over the last seven weeks. He's been an ace special teamer but hasn't made much of an impact on offense.
