Pitt Recruiting Former Nevada S Richard Toney
PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers are continuing to search for depth to add on defense through the transfer portal this offseason and that has led them to former Nevada defensive back, Richard Toney.
Toney told The Portal Report that Pitt was one of 16 schools that had expressed interest in landing his commitment out of the transfer portal.
North Carolina, TCU, UNLV, Tulsa, Memphis, Tulane, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Washington State, Temple, USF, Louisiana Tech, James Madison, Akron and Old Dominion have all reached out to express interest as well.
Toney, a 6'0 and 175-pound safety originally from Arlington, Texas, led the Wolfpack in tackles (67) and interceptions (two) and became the first Nevada player to return two picks for touchdowns since 2017. He added 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack as well. It was a breakout year for Toney, who had appeared in just seven games and made eight tackles prior to the 2023 season.
The Panthers are well-stocked at safety, with all three "starters" at that position - Donovan McMillon, Javon McIntyre and P.J. O'Brien - returning in 2024, but with at least two seasons of eligibility remaining for Toney, he can be a piece this coaching staff builds upon for the future.
