PITTSBURGH -- Kenny Pickett's leadership and impact both on and off the field in his five years as a Pitt Panther garnered widespread praise, and those same traits have followed him to the NFL.

Pickett, a first-round pick just a year ago after guiding Pitt to an ACC championship, is entering a pivotal second year as the starter for the Pittsburgh Steeler. He fell just short of a playoff berth as a rookie, but after leading his team to a 7-2 record in the second half, has earned the respect of his teammates and coaches alike.

On Monday, the Steelers announced that Pickett was named one of the team's four captains for the 2023 season. It is quite the honor, especially for a relative newcomer, as commanding a locker room chock full of veterans is no simple task for any player.

Pickett's expansive experience at Pitt aided him in preparing to be a leader at the next level, and Pat Narduzzi heaped praise upon the way he carried himself as a Panther.

"He's a worker," Narduzzi said. "He's got a way about him."

Pickett has stepped in and instantaneously been held in high regard by those in the organization, and for good reason. He has displayed the poise of a seasoned veteran while continuously improving and demonstrating a great work ethic.

"I bet you his car is one of the first ones here in the morning and one of the last ones to leave," Narduzzi said. "The players see that."

Pickett has led by example and impressed with his level of thoroughness and preparation on a daily basis, which goes a long way towards maintaining a culture and instilling confidence in his peers.

“It’s not only leading the players, but it’s also the staff and the personnel over there knowing that he has a good feel for what’s happening in the locker room," Narduzzi said.

As Pickett continues to take on a role as a leader, he also has taken huge steps forward in his development as a player after a strong preseason and finish to his rookie campaign. If he can elevate his game to the next level this season, he'll further cement his status as the Steelers' next franchise quarterback.

"He's going to make gigantic improvements from last year to this year," Narduzzi said. "I think they're going to see a different guy this year."
