Report: Pitt Fires OC Frank Cignetti
PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers carried out the widely anticipated decision to move on from offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti Jr. after just two seasons at the school.
Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette originally reported that Pitt had made the change at offensive coordinator just moments before the program released a statement confirming the news.
“I want to thank Frank for his service and dedication to our football program the past two years,” Narduzzi said in a statement. “We wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
Cignetti's contract with the program officially expired following the 2023 season, and the program opted not to bring him back into the fold. The Pitt Panthers were expected to make sweeping changes following their worst season under Pat Narduzzi, and it's unlikely that Cignetti will represent the only change to the coaching staff moving forward.
Cignetti returned to Pitt ahead of the 2022 season after spending two years in the same position at Boston College. Cignetti's first stop in his coaching career was with the Panthers as a graduate assistant in 1989 before occupying the offensive coordinator role with the program during the 2009 and 2010 campaigns.
Under Cignetti's guidance, Pitt averaged 31.3 points in 2022 and finished in the bottom half of the ACC in passing yards, touchdowns and interceptions. The unit took a step back in 2023 as they ranked last in the conference in yards per game and second-to-last in points per game, entering the final game of the regular season, while deploying three different starting quarterbacks.
