PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers lost the one offensive assistant they had hoped to bring back in 2024 when news that wide receivers coach Tiquan Underwood would be leaving for an NFL job surfaced. As Underwood was on his way out, he made sure to say goodbye to the players he had coached during his two seasons in Pittsburgh.

"It was truly an honor & a privilege to coach at the University of Pittsburgh," Underwood wrote on Twitter. "Thank you [Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke] and [Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi] for the opportunity. What makes this place special is the people. From day one my family and I were greeted with open arms and for that I am forever grateful. #H2P"

Underwood took a job with the New England Patriots last week. He had reportedly been approached earlier in the offseason about taking a job on new Syracuse head coach Fran Brown's staff, but turned it down.

During Underwood's lone season in Pittsburgh, Jared Wayne surpassed the 1,000-receiving yard mark and eventually signed an undrafted free agent and he helped recruit a standout freshman class to the Panthers during this past cycle. Kenny Johnson emerged as a starter in his first season at the college level as a kick returner and wideout and the program has high hopes for classmates Israel Polk, Zion Fowler El and Lamar Seymore.

Bub Means and Konata Mumpfield also improved on their 2022 numbers in their second seasons being coached by Underwood and Means has now earned an NFL Combine invite.

The Panthers have undergone major changes to the coaching staff this offseason following a 3-9 campaign in 2023. There's been turnover at offensive coordinator, defensive line coach, tight ends coach, special teams coordinator, running backs coach, offensive line coach and now wide receivers coach. Underwood's position is the last one Pitt has left to fill before the official start of spring practices.
