Report: Pitt Favored Adding Cal, Stanford to ACC
PITTSBURGH -- Another recent round of conference realignment has left the Pac 12 bare and forced two of the biggest remaining brands - Cal and Stanford - to explore other options, like leaving the league as well and joining the Pitt Panthers in the ACC.
According to a report from Pat Forde and Richard Johnson of Sports Illustrated, Pitt was one of the schools to support adding Cal and Stanford to the league during meetings between member schools and the ACC, but the initiative fell one vote short of being officially considered.
"The two members of the disintegrating Pac-12 need 12 of the 15 members of the ACC to support their move," the report reads. "Four schools stood opposed when the issue was discussed Wednesday night, sources say: Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina and North Carolina State. Lacking the requisite numbers, sources say it is unlikely that the potential expansion of the league will be put to a formal vote."
The ACC had also reportedly considered adding SMU in addition to the two Pac-12 teams. But there is not much optimism that adding any of those schools would create an increase in revenue significantly enough to offset bringing in another mouth to feed.
It appears that ACC expansion efforts will fall short for now.
