PITTSBURGH -- USC and UCLA set off alarms all over college athletics last week when the two iconic Pac-12 schools announced that they would ditch their traditional homes and join the Big 10. It is move driven almost entirely by money created with big-time football teams, and that fact threatens to leave some schools behind. The Pitt Panthers are part of the so-called "middle class" of Power Five athletic departments that could be left on the chopping block as the borders of college sports shift. 

The Panthers will either have to help defend their home conference, the ACC, or prepare a resume worthy of joining the SEC or Big 10.

Stephen Thompson graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications and political science from Pitt in April 2022 after spending four years as a sports writer and editor at The Pitt News, the University of Pittsburgh's independent, student-run newspaper.  He primarily worked the Pitt men's basketball beat, and filled in on coverage of football, volleyball, softball, gymnastics and lacrosse, in addition to other sports as needed. His work at The Pitt News has won awards from the Pennsylvania News Media Association and Associated College Press.  During the spring and summer of 2021, Stephen interned for Pittsburgh Sports Now, covering baseball in western Pennsylvania.
