PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers had a successful academic year in 2022-23 and the numbers back it up.

CBS Sports compiled a ranking of every athletic department in Division I by awarding points for success in five sports - men's and women's basketball, football and two other wild card sports, with extra weight given to wins in sports with more national attention. The Panthers checked in at No. 13 nationally - tied with Notre Dame - and first among ACC schools. Duke and Florida State were the closest at 15th and 16th, respectively.

The Panthers enjoyed a strong end to a football season that began on shaky ground, ripping off five straight victories to close the year with nine wins and a spot in the final AP top 25 poll of the year.

Volleyball continued its dominance of the ACC, clinching a share of the conference title for the third time in six seasons and advancing to the Final Four of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament for the second consecutive year.

Men's and women's soccer both made noise in the NCAA Tournament as well. The women's team played in the Big Dance for the first time in program history, hosting their opening game in Pittsburgh and winning two contests. Meanwhile, the men's team advanced to the College Cup for the second time in as many years.

Men's basketball put a cap on the athletic year that was at Pitt by reviving their sluggish program. The Panthers won 24 games - including a program record 14 in ACC play. They also earned a ranking in the AP top 25 and made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seven years, then won multiple games in that event for the first time since 2009.
