Pitt Basketball Lands Sharpshooting Marquette Transfer
PITTSBURGH -- Marquette transfer Greg Elliot visited with the Pitt Panthers this past weekend and clearly liked what he saw. The career 41%-shooter from 3-point distance announced his commitment to Jeff Capel's Panthers on Tuesday afternoon via Instagram, rounding out a backcourt that has been starved of offensive threats from the outside ever since Capel arrived in 2018.
Elliot, a 6-foot-3 guard from Detroit, Michigan spent four years with the Golden Eagles, playing under head coaches Steve Wojciechowski and Shaka Smart and played the best season of his college career so far this past year. Despite reduced playing time, he posted career-highs in points, three-point attempts and free throw percentage. He is a low usage player that should fit in well alongside the ball-dominant players that Pitt returns or has added this offseason.
The backcourt had been gutted by the losses of Femi Odukale, Ithiel Horton, who transfered, and Onyebuchi Ezeakudo, who graduated. It was then rebuilt by the arrival of coveted transfer Nelly Cummings and the return of Nike Sibande, a skilled socrer who missed all of the 2021-22 season after suffering a preseason knee injury. Super-senior guard Jamarius Burton will also return - along with his 12.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest - making the backcourt an expected strength of this year's team.
Elliot has one year of eligibility remaining. He fills Pitt's 11th scholarship, meaning that there are two more left for Capel to use.
